Fall marks another ideal time to visit Charlotte, as temperatures cool off, family travelers retreat for the school year, and hotel prices come down from spring and summer rates. If you're looking for fall foliage or a side trip to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains or mountain towns like Asheville, plan on visiting from mid- to late October to see the leaves at their peak. In Charlotte proper, you can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s F for most of the season and lots of fall-themed events. With ideal temperatures and highs in the 60s and the upper 70s F, the entire city in bloom, and outdoor and other attractions operating on extended hours, spring is the perfect time to visit Charlotte.

Landsford Canal State Park is about 45 minutes south of Charlotte in Chester County. It’s a unique, scenic environment — and one that’s flat if hills aren’t your thing. A short hike takes you along the Catawba River and through the ruins of an old canal system from the 1800s. You’ll want to take photos, especially if you make it down during May and June when the rocky shoals spider lilies are blooming. It is, however, a starting point for places that a Charlotte resident could drive to in less than three hours, spend a few hours in the woods, and make it home by nightfall. Spring has average highs ranging from 59 degrees F (15 degrees C) in March to a warm 81 degrees F (27 degrees C) in May, with low temperatures comfortably above freezing. Note that there are frequent rain showers in the spring, so come prepared with a rain jacket and waterproof shoes. While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. It's a short two-hour drive from Charlotte, and it has pretty much everything you could want from a quiet weekend getaway.
I no longer live in the area, but I still plan to revisit a few of these spots in the next year when I'm in North Carolina for a visit. You'll find plenty of unique shops to visit downtown — including one of my favorite independent book stores, Firestorm Books & Coffee. If you're into art, the River Arts District houses artist studios in former factory buildings while downtown is home to beautiful architecture and plenty of galleries to visit. While there's now a White Duck Taco Shop location in Charlotte, I still highly recommend stopping at the downtown Asheville location.
